I partially agree with your take about JS, it is indeed messy on many parts, although it improved in recent times. All in all, it could have been much worse, as on Netscape around 1994 they were seriously considering Web to run on Java or Schema and at Microsoft they were trying to push for a subset of Visual Basic (VBScript). Also, as Brendan Eich had measly 10 days to come up with “the language for the Web” by himself, I think he did a remarkable job.
