As an amateur linguist, I don't know exactly if I'm too new to this field of study, but I would say there's no such thing as "error of usage" in the sense that, if some "wrong" construction is widely used it becomes a norm for a given place.

At some point some Old English speakers could have missed the "thou", the third genre or the cases for English and they could have called it all "wrong" but here we are.
